INDEPENDENT DEFENSIVE PRACTICE • AUSTRALIA

Attackers improve.
Defenders should too.

UMBRASEC is an independent defensive security practice in Australia. I publish detection engineering, threat analysis, and a free SMB security guide - and I take on scoped advisory work when a business wants the same method run with them.

WHO'S SPEAKING
0xdev1 - independent practitioner, Australia.
Seven years in GRC and detection engineering, including law-enforcement environments. I publish under a handle because of that background. Every claim sourced, every rule runnable.
SCOPE
Everything published here is defensive - detection, analysis, and mitigation. No offensive tooling, exploits, or malware. Advisory work is defensive too.

Research.

This is where writeups land - technical, sourced, and reproducible against your own data. No filler and no recycled vendor posts; the list grows as new analysis ships.

THREAT ANALYSIS
Sixteen Days From KEV to Exfiltration - What the Mathspace Breach Says About Internal Tooling
Metabase patched an unauthenticated SQL injection on 6 August 2026 and said the flaw was already being exploited. CISA listed it on 11 August. On 27 August, 1,079,819 records left an Australian platform's self-hosted instance. Every date was public before the data moved - the failure was that nothing connected the advisory to the asset.

Your MSP's RMM Is Your Attack Surface - What the N-central Compromise Means for SMBs
Two authentication bypasses in N-able N-central were exploited in the wild in early August 2026. If your IT is outsourced, the vulnerable server sits in your provider's rack and you have no patch to apply - but the remote-control sessions, the masqueraded binary and the tunnel service all landed on your endpoints. What you can still detect, and what to ask your MSP.

SafePay Is Claiming Australian Victims - Why Real Estate SMBs Are in the Blast Radius
A centralized ransomware crew now claiming Australian victims, profiled from public reporting. Why real-estate SMBs fit its target profile - data-rich, cash-handling, thinly defended - and the playbook stage by stage, mapped to the Essential Eight controls that break each link in the chain.

How this practice works.

Sourced, not asserted

Every technical claim links back to primary sources - vendor advisories, MITRE ATT&CK, CVE records, and reputable reporting. If it isn't cited, it isn't stated.

Defensive by scope

The work explains how attacks function so defenders can catch them - detection logic, log artifacts, mitigations. No weaponized exploits, jailbreak libraries, or malware ship from here.

Reproducible

Detections come as rules you can run, mapped to real event IDs and ATT&CK techniques, with false-positive and tuning notes - so you can verify them against your own environment.

On honesty: You won't find report counts, disclosure tallies, or marketing metrics on this site. The work is the argument - every rule runnable, every claim tied to a primary source, all of it there to be checked.

Open source.

Small defensive artefacts from the writeups - rules, a KEV monitor, a blue-team reference. They are evidence of how the work is done, not a product line. Status labels are honest.

kev-watch
WORKING

A zero-dependency Python monitor for the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Tracks newly added, actively-exploited CVEs and flags ones that match products you care about. Public data only.

sigma-pack
EARLY

The Sigma rules and KQL queries from the research writeups, shipped as runnable files - seven Sigma rules (Kerberoasting, LiteLLM command injection, N-central post-exploitation) and three OAuth consent-phishing KQL queries so far, each mapped to its ATT&CK technique. Grows one writeup at a time.
